Self-Forgiveness and Responsible Moral Agency

Margaret R. Holmgren
All your life you’re told forgiveness is for you. But we’re never told why it’s for you. It means you’re working on owning your life.
Shani Tran
Therapist and Founder, The Shani Project
Forgiveness is nothing less than the way we heal the world. We heal the world by healing each and every one of our hearts. The process is simple, but it is not easy.

Although interpersonal forgiveness has recently received some discussion in philosophical literature, little has been written about the equally important topic of self-forgiveness. I will take an analysis of interpersonal forgiveness I have developed and extend it to self-forgiveness. While the same basic principles provide the moral ground for each type of forgiveness, forgiving ourselves is sufficiently different from forgiving others that there is much to be gained from an independent examination of self-forgiveness.
